The car

The brief.

A 2009 Mini Cooper S convertible — bought with two broken engines and zero mechanical experience. The plan? Rebuild one of them. How hard can it be?

Harder than expected. But that's never stopped me.

The goal is an OEM+ Cooper S — everything rebuilt to factory standard, with a handful of tasteful upgrades where it makes sense. No track mods, no forced induction upgrades, no wholesale character changes. Just a properly sorted convertible Cooper S that drives the way it should have left the factory — only better.

Every part sourced, every torque figure documented, every mistake on camera.

Build log.

  • Stage 01 · Complete

    Engine out

Subframe dropped, engine and gearbox out as one unit, everything bagged and labelled. The bits people forget to photograph, photographed.

  • Stage 02 · Complete

    Teardown & inspection

Head off, bottom end apart, measure everything. Bore, crank journals, piston-to-wall — every number written down before a single part is ordered.

  • Stage 03 · In progress

    Machine work & reassembly

Head skimmed and pressure tested, block honed, then reassembly with new bearings, rings, timing chain and gaskets — all to factory torque.

  • Stage 04 · Up next

    Engine in & first start

Ancillaries refreshed while it's out, engine back in, fluids, and the moment the whole project is about.

  • Stage 05

    Cosmetic restoration

Paint correction, roof clean and re-proof, headlight restoration, wheel refurb and interior detail.

Complete parts list.

Search the parts documented on this car by name, category or note. SHOP links go to the exact part used, or the closest OEM-equivalent listing — always confirm fitment against your VIN before ordering.

27 parts shown
Shopping note: SHOP buttons lead to the exact part where a destination exists. Graded or VIN-sensitive items are labelled in the notes — measure first, order second.
Torque-to-yield bolts: TTY bolts stretch permanently as they are tightened, so they are single-use — never reuse them, and never clean one up and put it back. On this rebuild that means the cylinder head bolts, con rod bolts, main bearing cap bolts, crank pulley bolt and flywheel bolts as a minimum. Check the workshop manual for your exact engine before you start, because the list varies by year.

Most gasket and timing kits do not include them. If yours doesn't, ring a Mini dealer parts desk with your VIN and order them as genuine — they are cheap compared to the job of doing the engine twice, and the torque-plus-angle figures only hold true with new bolts.
